On the 21st of June
1970, the man they call `Fez' was brought into the world. His place of entry was
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The people that brought Fez into the world
were a couple of mixed races, Indian and Scottish. This mix resulted in a child
with one dark/black eye and one normal brown eye. It was a special trait for a
special child.
Fez had a childhood that was based around an ‘education is everything' sort of
father, a mother who looked out for the welfare of her children, a sister named
Sofia, a cat named Tibbles and a wonderful dog that was named Tiny. His
childhood on the West Coast could be defined as being one of adventure and
misadventure. He was danger prone and made many visits to the hospital for the
quick stitch up. That said however, many of the misadventures that happened at
his grandma's house and his great aunts farm would provide the inspiration for
ideas that he would later write and produce.
Somewhere along the line his childhood gave way to a confused and misunderstood
youth. An unpleasant time at high school and arguments with his parents about
future directions continued to lower his self-esteem. He would fight emotionally
driven over eating binges, being overweight, bullying at school, and his father
by escaping to the army. At 18 he flew to Cornwallis, Nova Scotia and began his
basic training course.
The army was a place where he learned many things including how far he could
push himself mentally and physically. It would help later on as he continued to
produce his projects when no one else believed in his ideas. Fez was not the
best soldier though. While he enjoyed the fitness he had a problem with poor
leadership and often voiced his concerns when they weren't asked for. The result
was that Fez would stay as a private for 11 years. He claims to have been an
expert potato peeler and kitchen hand!
Disillusioned, Fez would often go between reserve and regular service while he
tried to find himself in other forms of achievement such as the ambulance
program in Alberta, at SAIT or through leadership training in British Columbia
at BCIT. Disagreements with his father continued to spiral downwards and
eventually so did Fez.
There were many times when Fez would be living in confusion. When these times
would come upon him he would retreat to the Canadian forests and embark on
distances that ranged from 6-28km sometimes with and sometimes without his
wonder dog running around near him. He often did the long hikes at night without
light so as to test his personal fears and to build up his confidence levels.
During this time Fez was also frequenting a lot of urban alternative tribes in
Vancouver where he found many people who were misunderstood, who were looking
for direction and a purpose in life, who were frustrated at the world for not
helping them get away from poverty, and also people who were dead against a
corporate slave environment. Fez hit rock bottom in 2000 after turning 30. It
was only his dog, a few loyal friends, and some good counseling that got him
back to a better state of health. He needed something to bring him back to the
happy person that he liked to be. Through his book production he felt that he
was contributing something positive to society and at the same time proving to
himself that he did have what it took to become a powerful storyteller.
Fez has written in many different areas across a broad range of subjects,
but it was his children's writing that was his first step towards rejoining
the rest of the world. Usually on his walks ideas would come into his mind.
They were ideas about his dog being an amazing fire fighting rescue dog, and
about other ideas such as flying squirrels. From there he would continue to
walk, to think, to enjoy the forests that he was in, and to write the many
ideas down by hand as soon as he was ready for them to come out. They would
drive out of the forest parking lot with his happy dog barking at the cars
as they drove by. Sassy was truly an inspiration to him.
Once a good idea came into Fez's head, he would let the idea stay in his
head for up to a week. If the ideas didn't go away, then they were meant to
be written down, which would be done by hand. Later, he would type up each
story onto the computer and fire them off via email to his awaiting editor.
The modern advantage of the Internet, online bookstores, & on-demand
publishing enabled Fez to produce and sell his adventurous stories when no
one else would give him a chance in the publishing world.
The more books he produced, the better he felt about himself. He didn't feel
like he was a man who had hit thirty and had no achievements or accomplishments.
He resumed his love of travel. He visited India to see what his father's culture
& country were like. He also traveled to Australia and to New Zealand. He was
keen to meet the travelers from the other Commonwealth countries and to meet
many personalities that were in the "Independent artist business."
He also wanted to see for himself what the situation was like for the world
because of pollution, religion, and big business, which controlled the various
governments of the world. He wanted to see if what the Canadian government was
telling everyone in Canada was actually true or not. Was exploitation of the
world's resources diminishing or was it growing? Were America’s secret
government organizations around the world guilty of manipulating other small
countries to get what they wanted? Uncle Fez wanted to know the truth!
Unfortunately Fez was saddened to see that New Zealand and Australia were in a
similar situation as Canada. They were countries that he loved, though they were
full of some really cool people, they were being led by politicians who did
nothing for the environment or for small business or for the independent artist
who wanted to make something of themselves. But his desire to not give up and to
be something good that came out of Canada continued to inspire him.
Projects and producing them from start to finish has become the motivation and
the main purpose in Fez’s life. The amount of talent and diversity shown in his
work is endless. The amount of ideas in his head is immeasurable. No drawing
board is big enough for him. On and on Fez goes, his ideas come thick and fast.
Alas, funding is not so thick and definitely not fast, so production of Fez's
ideas is limited to his own self-funding. But things are moving forward slowly
but surely. That’s extremely positive news in his mind.
His catalogue of work continues to grow. Even as he completes his nursing degree
in Australia his mind continues to come up with new ideas. Some of which he
finds the money to produce. For Fez, inspiration can come from the utterance of
a stranger on a train or a tram to a skate boarder doing tricks downtown in the
central business district, to a girl marching down the street protesting about
how her country helped to take over another country for its oil. He might see a
strange bug or watch a bird steal a hot dog from a person's hand or perhaps see
a blue heeler dog bark along to a song played on the city street by its owner.
It can be anything. All Fez needs is a spark to create an idea and then the rest
is history.
Producing his own work has lifted Fez's spirit and has brought him back to being
a happier person. Once more he is able to enjoy his life and dream of the day he
can move into his own place in rural Canada to live with his dog. Fez will
continue to move one foot in front of the other as he continues to walk - day
and at night, with and without his dog, while coming up with more fantastic
ideas that will become children's books, comics, novels, non-fiction projects
and maybe even the odd movie.
One thing for sure about Fez, he has a lot of personal drive, which is what
keeps him going day after day. He is a proud Canadian and his dog is a proud
Australian. Together they are a powerful team.
